CHAN 2024: List of Nairobi roads set for closure

The Kenya traffic boss, Joseph Chirchir, has issued an update on road closures following the ongoing Africa Championship tournament in the capital city.

According to the Traffic Department, a number of roads will be closed to allow seamless transitioning of fans heading out to watch the live matches at Kasarani Stadium on Thursday, August 7, 2025, along Thika Road.

The department on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, issued a statement updating the road users of major roads that will be affected on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

According to the update by Traffic, road users using Aerodrome Road from Madaraka roundabout will be expected to use an alternative road on Thursday; likewise, users using the Bunyala roundabout are also advised to take other alternative routes.

“Road closure: Aerodrome Road from Madaraka roundabout up to Bunyala roundabout,” Chirchir said.

On the other hand, motorists using Lang’ata Road from Madaraka roundabout to Lusaka roundabout have been advised to take other routes since the main roads will be closed down.

In addition, Traffic is calling upon Mombasa road users using the Lusaka roundabout to manoeuvre using alternatives that have been provided by the department.

Alternative routes

Meanwhile, as Kenyans prepare to watch the long-anticipated Kenya versus Angola match on Thursday, August 7, 2025, motorists have been advised of alternative routes to use following the major road closure.

Motorists from Mombasa Road heading to CBD are advised to use the Likoni Enterprise Road at General Motors and Southern Bypass at Olesereni; likewise, motorists from Langata Road to CBD have been urged to use Raila Odinga Road.

Lang’ata Road users have also been provided with another alternative, which, according to the traffic report, is that they are advised to use Muhoho Road at Mabgathi roundabout.

“Motorists from Mombasa Road going to CBD to use Likoni-Enterprise Road at General Motors and Southern Bypass at Olesereni, and motorists from Langata Road to CBD to use Raila Odinga Road or Muhuo Road at Mbagathi roundabout,” Chirchir stated.

On the other hand, motorists from Nairobi Central Business District heading towards Thika Road, Ruiru, Juja, and Thika have been asked to use Limuru or Kiambu Road.

In addition, Chirchir has issued an advisory to matatus ferrying passengers to Kasarani to use Ruaraka Baba-Ndogo Road and Ngomongo Road to Ngomongo roundabout.

On his part, Chirchir added that motorists from Thika Road towards CBD should use either the Eastern Bypass, Kimabu Road or Limuru Road, further sending stern warnings to motorists to avoid Thika Road unless they are going to Kasarani Stadium.
