Saboti constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has suggested a change of graduation gowns for Honorary Degree graduands so as to differ from those graduating after undertaking actual studies.

Taking to his official X account on Saturday, December 21, 2024, Amisi argued that it was unfair for Honorary degree graduands to put on gowns similar to those of candidates graduating after attending classes and meeting all the requirements for the degree awards.

Amisi on Sudi’s degree

Amisi who was reacting to Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi’s Honorary Degree award expressed his disappointment that he will be putting on the same gown as the one won by Sudi, when he graduates in 2025.

He further called for respect for higher learning institutions.

Can we have different graduation regalia for those who actually study like me and those others! I can’t believe that next year when I graduate from USIU where I have attended all classes, done all assignments, participated in class discussions and presentations, field studies, sat for all exams, finished thesis and defended, where I know all my classmates from pre-requisites to year 2 and read all the requisite academic materials, that I will also wearing the same upon graduation next year. Let’s respect our institution of higher learning, bwana! Kenya needs a renaissance!” Amisi stated.

Sudi’s Honorary Degree

Amisi’s proposal comes after Sudi was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by Northwestern Christian University.

Sudi on Saturday, December 21, 2024, took to his official X account to express his gratitude for having been honored.

The controversial lawmaker revealed that he had received the Honorary Doctorate Degree in Leadership, Administration, and Management, during a graduation ceremony at The Eldoret National Polytechnic.

Sudi further stated that the recognition underscored the limitless nature of education.

“I am deeply honoured to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Leadership, Administration, and Management from Northwestern Christian University at The Eldoret National Polytechnic. This recognition underscores the limitless nature of education—it truly has no limits,” Sudi stated.

Sudi’s forgery charges

Sudi was in June 2024 acquitted of forgery charges by a Nairobi court.

Anti-corruption chief magistrate Felix Kombo freed the MP stating that the prosecution failed to produce the academic certificates he is alleged to have forged.

The MP was charged with forging his academic certificates and presenting a false declaration form to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to be cleared to contest the 2013 general election.

The magistrate faulted the investigating officer for the manner he obtained part of the evidence.
