Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has addressed a video clip where he was recorded calling for the impeachment of President William Ruto.

In the undated clip shared by Starehe MP Amos Mwago Maina, Amisi is heard saying that he expects at least 340 MPs to vote in favour of Ruto’s impeachment motion.

“When the members of parliament report to Parliament next week, the Gen Z need to force those members to impeach the president. Any member of parliament who will not vote for the impeachment of the president, they (should) occupy their homes. If I bring a vote of no confidence against President William Ruto I expect 340 members of parliament to support it,” Amisi says in the clip.

“They need to force the members of parliament to impeach the president. We do not need to put Gen Z’s on the streets to be killed when we have the National Assembly to do what Gen Zs are supposed to do. The Gen Zs have given us a platform now what is remaining is for the members of parliament to do the rest.”

However, Amisi now says the clip is old, taken in June 2024 at the height of anti-government protests led by Generation Z (Gen Z), and could be taken out of context in the current situation.

“This is a very old clip. Taken during the anti-finance revolt, those using it to expand their bargain from their godfathers, try another day. Impeachment of a president is not announced, it just happens. So relax, take a deep breath and focus,” Amisi stated.

The vocal Saboti MP however did not indicate whether he had changed his stance since June on the impeachment of the president.

Amisi is a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, which seems to have closed ranks with the Kenya Kwanza government after the anti-government protests.

In July, four ODM members were appointed to the government.

The four ODM members appointed to the cabinet in July include Ali Hassan Joho (Mining, Blue Economy), Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives and MSME Development), John Mbadi (National Treasury) and Opiyo Wandayi (Energy and Petroleum).

ODM-affiliated MPs were also instrumental in the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, working hand-in-hand with Kenya Kwanza MPs.

Despite Raila previously announcing that ODM had not joined the government, the camaraderie between the opposition party and the government has raised questions on whether the former is working for the government.

On Sunday, November 3, 2024, President William Ruto revealed why he decided to close ranks with his political arch-rival and ODM party leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during a church service at the African Divine Church Nairobi, Ruto said that in the spirit of uniting Kenyans, Raila agreed to the formation of the broad-based government adding that their working together is for the betterment of the country.

He said that regardless of the political party or political coalition, they will unite the country.
