Three people, including two men and a woman, died in a fatal road accident on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at Mua Bridge near Kyumbi Market on the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway in Machakos County.

Confirming the incident, Athi River East Sub-County Police Commander Anderson Mbae said the deceased include a 32-year-old female passenger, the matatu driver, and a 51-year-old male passenger.

Mbae attributed the accident to an unregistered HOWO lorry travelling from Mombasa toward Nairobi, which veered into the wrong lane and blocked oncoming vehicles. The lorry, driven by 46-year-old Mulandi Mumbwa, collided head-on with a matatu.

“David Muli, 54, the driver of the PSV matatu under KAM SACCO, is among those who died on the spot,” the OCPD said.

Seventeen people were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Referral Hospital with various injuries. Witnesses at the scene said the matatu fell on its right side near the driver.

The bodies were moved to Machakos Level 5 Referral Mortuary, awaiting autopsy, while the vehicles were towed to Kyumbi Police Station for inspection.

Machakos County Health CECM Justus Kasivu said the hospital had received 37 patients with a mix of serious and minor injuries.

“All patients are currently being attended to in the Casualty and Radiology departments, and the response is progressing smoothly,” he said.
