An accident occurred this afternoon at the Nairobi Expressway Mlolongo entry a day after the highway was officially opened.

It involved a heavy truck which crashed into the Expressway leading to the temporary closure.

Reports show that the truck which was primarily travelling along Mombasa Road crashed into the barrier separating the two highways before overturning on the Expressway.

This becomes the first reported accident after the highway was commissioned yesterday.

This has caused traffic to snail up on both Nairobi Expressway and Mombasa Road.

The cause of the accident is yet to be established.

Yesterday, President Kenyatta officially commissioned the 27km highway, that connects Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the east of the city to the Nairobi-Nakuru highway in the west after the end of its trial period.

During the launching ceremony, Uhuru said the project is a fundamental overhaul of how government can use the PPP model to bridge infrastructure deficits.

“Hongera to all who made this masterpiece a success and for the government and the people of Kenya for having confidence in our infrastructure projects,” he said.

“Our gratitude goes to CRBC for choosing to invest and demonstrate their confidence in our country.”
