‘I was not elected to talk about climate change’ – Salasya

10:41 AM

Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya is not here for the public criticism over what seems like a ‘lack of knowledge’ on matters of climate.

Through his Twitter account, the MP blasted netizens saying he is being targeted due to his struggles with the King’s language.

However, he adds he is a local MP and was not elected to discuss climate change.

“All those idiots criticizing me on Twitter on how I responded about #climatechange wakwende uko na kizungu yao wasimame kura pia wawe wabunge in their constituencies. Politics ni local wakwende na kizungu Yao.I was not elected to talk about climate change idiots munisikie,” he tweeted.

This leaves one question: are Kenyans more shocked or relieved about his response?

Salasya who says he has a plan he could propose to help African governments combat climate change was speaking to SPM Buzz at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi on the sidelines of the ongoing Africa Climate Summit.

The MP was asked to briefly explain what the convention was all about and this is what he had to say sending Twitter in shambles.

“I was in Mombasa last week, and it was so cold. I asked them, what is happening? They told me the sun has become too much and the ice is melting, and so when it melts, that thing becomes cold,” he said adding;

“Global climate is real and whatever people are going to be told here, if they are going to implement, well, for the sake of the country.”

In his response to how he is championing climate action, he said;

“We are representative of the rural constituencies who mostly use firewood (for cooking) and now we are advocating for the use of Koko Jiko and those other types of gas, but the people don’t have money. We are hoping the government will come up with measures, like the reduction of cooking gas prices.”
