Explainer: Changing Safaricom SIM card won’t erase your Fuliza debt

A fresh SIM card can fix a damaged line, replace one that is lost or stolen, and even improve your network experience. What it cannot do is make your Fuliza debt disappear.
Despite the rumour making the rounds on social media and in everyday conversations, replacing your Safaricom SIM does not reset your M-PESA account or cancel any money you owe.
Fuliza is a digital overdraft linked to your mobile number and M-PESA account, meaning your debt stays with you until it is fully repaid.
Here are five important facts that explain why.
1. Fuliza is connected to your M-PESA account, not the physical SIM
Many people assume the SIM card stores everything about their mobile money account. It does not.
The SIM allows you to access Safaricom’s network. Your Fuliza facility, M-PESA balance, transaction history and borrowing records are linked to your registered mobile number. When you replace a SIM, you are still using the same account, only with a different physical card.
That means your outstanding Fuliza balance remains exactly where it was before the replacement.
2. Replacing a SIM does not create a new financial identity
Getting a replacement SIM is similar to replacing a lost debit card. The card changes, but your bank account does not.
The same applies to Fuliza. Whether your old SIM was damaged, lost or upgraded, your financial information remains unchanged. Your borrowing limit, repayment history and any unpaid balance continue to exist because they are tied to your account, not the plastic chip.
If you log into M-PESA after activating the replacement SIM, everything is still there.
3. Incoming money can still be used to settle the debt
One of the biggest misconceptions is that a replacement SIM somehow prevents Fuliza from recovering money owed.
It does not.
If you receive money through M-PESA while you have an outstanding Fuliza balance, the system automatically deducts what you owe before making the remaining balance available. This happens regardless of whether you are using your original SIM or a newly replaced one.
For example, if you owe Ksh500 and someone sends you Ksh2,000, the outstanding amount is settled first before you can use the remaining funds.
4. Leaving the line unused will not cancel the balance
Some users believe that abandoning a line for several months will eventually erase the debt.
Unfortunately, that is not how digital overdrafts work.
Your Fuliza balance remains attached to your account until it is cleared. Even if you stop using the line for a long time, the debt does not expire simply because the SIM is inactive or sitting in a drawer.
The moment the account becomes active again and receives money, the repayment process can still take place.
5. Responsible borrowing saves you stress
Fuliza was created to help customers complete transactions when they are temporarily short of cash. It is meant to be a financial cushion, not a long-term source of funds.
Borrowing only what you need and repaying it as soon as possible helps you avoid unnecessary charges and keeps your borrowing record healthy. It also reduces the temptation to search for shortcuts that simply do not exist.
