For many people, payday can bring a temporary sense of financial relief, only for the money to disappear faster than expected. Rent, food, transport, bills, debt repayments and unexpected expenses can quickly consume a monthly salary, leaving little money for the final days before the next payday.

However, making a salary last longer does not always require earning more. Small changes in how money is planned and spent can make a significant difference.

Start with a realistic budget

One of the simplest ways to take control of a salary is to create a budget before spending begins. Instead of waiting until money is almost finished to check the balance, divide your income into essential expenses, savings, debt repayments and personal spending.

List fixed expenses such as rent, electricity, internet, transport and school-related costs. Then estimate flexible expenses such as food, entertainment and shopping.

A realistic budget should also leave room for unexpected costs. Setting aside even a small amount for emergencies can prevent an unplanned expense from disrupting the entire month.

Save before you start spending

Another useful habit is to treat savings as a priority rather than whatever remains at the end of the month.

After receiving a salary, set aside a predetermined amount for savings before allocating money for entertainment and other discretionary spending. The amount does not have to be large to begin with. Consistency is more important than starting with an unrealistic target.

It can also help to separate savings from everyday spending money, making it less tempting to use.

Ultimately, managing a salary is about knowing where the money is going before it disappears. A simple budget, awareness of small purchases and a consistent savings habit can make payday money stretch further while creating greater financial stability.

Watch the small expenses

Large purchases are easy to notice, but small daily expenses can quietly take a significant portion of a salary.

Buying takeaway meals frequently, ordering drinks, making unnecessary online purchases or regularly using transport when a cheaper option is available may seem harmless individually. However, these costs can add up over several weeks.

Tracking spending for a month can help reveal where money is going. A person may discover that they are spending considerably more on convenience than they realised.

One useful approach is to establish a weekly spending limit for non-essential expenses. Once that amount is used, avoid dipping into money allocated for bills or savings.
