President William Ruto has appointed 20 new judges to the High Court of Kenya, a move that is seen as a significant step in the country’s ongoing efforts to reform the Judiciary.

The appointments were announced in a Gazette notice dated May 9, 2024, and come after a rigorous vetting process by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The commission had received a total of 305 applications for the 20 vacant positions and had shortlisted 100 candidates.

The selection process, which included interviews from April 3 to May 3, 2024, was conducted to ensure that the new judges possess the requisite skills and experience to carry out their duties effectively.

The JSC forwarded the names of the selected candidates to the President a week ago, and he has now formally appointed them as judges of the High Court.

Court of Appeal

JSC recently published names of candidates shortlisted for Court of Appeal posts where the Judiciary is seeking to hire 11 persons as appellant judges.

In an advertisement published on April 23, 2024, Chief Justice Martha Koome-led commission accepted an application by former IEBC chair Issack Hassan Ahmed while it rejected the electoral commission’s immediate former chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Hassan, who is an advocate, was among 40 people who made it to the final list of candidates shortlisted for Court of Appeal posts.
