On Wednesday, September 14, 2022, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced new fuel prices for the period between September 15 and October 14, 2022.
In the changes, the price of a litre of super petrol, diesel and kerosene increased by Ksh20.18, Ksh25.00 and Ksh20.00 respectively. The government scrapped fuel subsidy for petrol, while partially retaining it for diesel (Ksh20.82) and kerosene (Ksh26.25).
As a result, the new fuel prices hit a historic high. The prices will however differ in different towns and counties, majorly due to transportation costs and other prevailing economic factors.
In Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, a litre of petrol will retail for Ksh179.30 from the current Ksh159.12 while diesel’s retail price will shoot to Ksh165 from the current Ksh140. The retail price for a litre of kerosene has hit a new high of Ksh147.94.
In Mombasa, which is Kenya’s second-largest city, a litre of petrol will retail for Ksh176.98 while diesel will go for Ksh162.76. A litre of kerosene in Mombasa will sell for Ksh145.69.
In Machakos, a litre of super petrol will sell for Ksh179.54, diesel for Ksh165.24 and kerosene for Ksh148.18.
In Kisumu, super petrol will retail for Ksh179.50 per litre, diesel for Ksh165.70 and kerosene will retail for Ksh148.66.
In Eldoret, a litre of super petrol will retail for Ksh179.50 while a litre of diesel will trade at Ksh165.72. Kerosene will be sold for Ksh148.67 per litre.
In Nakuru, Kenya’s most recent town that became a city, Kenyans will buy a litre of petrol will go for Ksh178.62 while diesel and kerosene will retail for Ksh164.83 and Ksh147.79 respectively.
In Siaya, a litre of super petrol will retail for Ksh179.83, diesel for Ksh166.04 and kerosene for Ksh148.88.
Kericho residents will buy a litre of petrol for Ksh180, diesel for Ksh166.21 and kerosene for Ksh149.17.
Highest fuel prices
Fuel prices will be the among highest in Kibish town in Turkana, where a litre of petrol will retail at Ksh187.56, diesel at Ksh173.77 and kerosene at Ksh156.73. The situation will be almost similar in the neighbouring Lokitaung town, where a litre of petrol will sell for Ksh187.33, diesel for Ksh173.55 and kerosene for Ksh156.49.
Mandera will have the most expensive fuel at the cost of Ksh192.35 for a litre of petrol, Ksh178.05 for diesel and Ksh160.98 for kerosene. The case will be almost the same for Northern and North Eastern towns.
