A family in Kikowani, Mombasa county has accused former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko of illegally visiting their mother’s grave and claiming that it belongs to his mother.

The disgruntled family accused the aspiring Mombasa governor of seeking political mileage with their mother’s graveyard in an attempt to prove that he has roots in the coastal county.

One of the family members confirmed that the grave which Sonko claimed belonged to his late mother was that of their mother who died seven years ago and was buried at the Kikowani Muslim cemetery.

“Itś so sad and painful for Sonko to come here and claim that this is his mother’s grave. Let Sonko look for his mother’s grave. This one is not it,” the man said amid sobs.

Sonko campaigns in Mombasa

Former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko kicked off his campaigns for Mombasa governorship with a rally at the historic Tononoka grounds on Saturday.

Sonko was accompanied by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and his running mate, Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo, adding a new dimension to the race to succeed Governor Hassan Joho.

Chairman of the Wiper Caucus, Mombasa chapter Sheikh Omar Twaha said the party is determined to revolutionise leadership in the coastal county. He asked other contenders to brace for a political showdown like no other.

“We are determined to take over Mombasa and those who wrote us off should prepare for a shocker of the century. This coming weekend, Team Sonko will turn Mombasa upside down. Already, a fleet of campaign vehicles is ready. There will be stopovers and multiple rallies,” Twaha told ‘People Daily’.
