A 63-year-old man on Tuesday night July 19, 2022, shot himself dead at his estranged wife’s house in Muthangari after she refused to go back with him to their matrimonial home.

Police, while confirming the incident, said the man separated from his wife in September 2021 and had been trying to reconcile.

Iyaz Mukhi, a civilian firearm holder, went to Haadi Apartments along Muthangari road where his wife shifted to in order to apologize.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the sexagenarian visited the estranged wife’s residence with the hope of resolving their marital issues and convincing her to return home.

The two had been living apart for the last 10 months, according to relatives

The wife however refused. Dejected, the man withdrew his pistol and shot himself on the left side of the chest.

“The deceased had separated from the wife in September 2021 and had gone to her apartment to apologize to her so that she could return home. When the wife declined to forgive him, he removed his pistol and shot himself,” police said.

The man was a licenced firearm holder

A neighbour called the police who rushed to the scene and rushed him to Nairobi Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Detectives also confirmed that the deceased was a licenced firearm holder.

At the scene, police recovered the firearm, a Glock pistol, and one expended cartridge which has been forwarded for analysis.

The body was transferred to the Chiromo mortuary awaiting post-mortem as police launched investigations into the matter.

At least twenty people have committed suicide across the country in the last two weeks, according to the police.

Mental health experts and psychologists have identified marital problems including divorce as some of the causes of suicides in the country.
