KRA confirms raiding Mombasa radio station after Governor Nassir protests
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has confirmed raiding Rahma Broadcasting Limited following Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir’s protest.
In a statement issued late at night on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, the taxman noted that all the procedures were followed before conducting the enforcement action. KRA pointed out that demand notice was issued to the radio management before the raid.
Radio Rahma is an Islamic radio station based in Mombasa that broadcasts to Coast residents.

“KRA’s attention has been drawn to media reports on enforcement actions taken. regarding the tax compliance of Rahma Broadcasting Limited,” the statement read in part.
Non-compliance
According to the taxman, the raid established that Rahma Broadcasting Limited was non-compliant in honouring its tax obligation. Efforts by KRA to compel the radio station to remit its due tax arrears proved futile informing the raid.
“Following a comprehensive review, it was determined that Rahma Broadcasting Limited was non-compliant in filing and paying various tax obligations.
“Engagements with the management of Rahma Broadcasting Limited have been ongoing since taxes became due and payable. Commitments were reached, however the taxpayer did not honour them,” KRA stated.

The taxman thus insisted that the raid was not politically instigated but it was part of their enforcement operation.
“Today’s activity at Rahma Broadcasting Limited is therefore part of normal KRA’s Enforcement operation. The Authority remains committed to facilitating. taxpayers and ensuring compliance with tax laws. KRA appreciates the cooperation of all taxpayers in fulfilling their tax obligations.”

Governor Nassir protests
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, accused KRA officials of trying to intimidate him due to his push to outlaw muguka in Mombasa.
While citing four different court orders that upheld the ban, a visibly irked and defiant Nassir expressed that he would not yield to pressure to revoke the ban for the sake of Mombasa residents.

“You came here, and everyone I have talked to is saying that they are not aware of the arrears, I think you have been sent to harass us”, Nassir stated.
“If you have been sent here to harass us, we will take this matter even further, if this has been occasioned by the ban on Muguka, you will not intimidate us”, the governor added.
He, however, expressed his commitment to engaging with President William Ruto over the muguka ban in Mombasa.
