Bodies of two male adults have been retrieved following rescue operations of families affected by flash floods at Kitengela.
The bodies were retrieved in two different areas of Noonkopir and a ditch within the town.
One male identified by families is said to have been crossing a swollen bridge kwa Saitoti using his bicycle before being swept away on Tuesday at 10 am.
According to relatives, the deceased who supplied sweet cakes had informed his family that he was coming home but did not arrive as scheduled only for his body to be recovered two kilometers from the Kwa Saitoti bridge today midmorning.
The bodies have been moved to Kitengela Sub County Hospital.
Flood death toll
As heavy rainfall persists across various regions of the country, the government has implemented several measures to mitigate risks to lives and property.
A national multi-agency emergency response committee has been activated to coordinate emergency efforts from the National Disaster Operations Centre located at Nyayo House.
Additionally, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are actively engaged in recovery and evacuation operations.
Distribution of essential items, including food and non-food items, continues nationwide, with plans for a sustained relief operation over the next two months.
Isaac Mwaura, the government spokesperson emphasized the ongoing efforts.
“The government has established a Relief Operations Centre at the National Cereals Produce Board (NCPB), with senior government officials leading response efforts in affected counties,” Mwaura said in a statement on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
Highlighting recent developments, Mwaura revealed that in the past 24 hours, 10 lives have been tragically lost, bringing the total national flood-related death toll to 179, encompassing 164 adults and 15 children.
Additionally, 20 individuals are reported missing, while 125 Kenyans have sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care in various health facilities across the country.
