Five Kenya Forest Service officers accused of killing a 19-year-old form three student on Wednesday appeared at the Eldama Ravine Law Courts.

According to the victim’s family, the officers battered Stephen Mwangi at the Narasha Forest as he attempted to rescue his mother who had been held hostage by the officers after she was accused of illegal logging.

The secondary school student sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Eldama Ravine Sub-County Hospital but was later referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).

He succumbed to his injuries yesterday while at the facility’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Local residents who accused the officers of continuous harassment expressed their disappointment in the officers and held protests.

They decried that the teenager did not deserve the harsh punishment from the officers since he was only defending his mother from the rogue officers.

“The mother of the deceased had requested his son to bring him some money the officers had demanded for, but on arriving at the forest, the boy found his mother being harassed which prompted him to intervene,” one Susan Wacuka, a local resident told a local publication.

Adding;

“I visited the deceased at Eldama Ravine Hospital and his situation was very bad. Shockingly, he could not speak but was still in handcuffs. How inhuman were the officers for them to beat up that young man to death?”
