EPRA: How to identify counterfeit LPG gas

07:49 PM

Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has issued guidelines on how to detect counterfeit (Liquified Petroleum Gas) LPG that continue to flood the black market.

According to EPRA, these easy steps can help one test for the authenticity of cooking gas cylinders during and after purchase including using the soap solution test.

In a video, EPRA while noting that fake LPG gas cylinders pose significant threats that may lead to leakage, explosions, or fires, elaborated on various practical ways to differentiate between genuine and counterfeit LPG by testing potential leakages.

One of the ways to safeguard against potential leakages, EPRA suggests applying a soapy solution to the pipes connecting the cylinder to the stove.

If there is a gas leak, bubbles will appear after applying the soap solution, indicating a potential hazard.

The regulatory authority also advised consumers to purchase LPG cylinders exclusively from licensed sellers and ensure to check for the company seal and safety cap during delivery.

According to the authority, cylinders with broken safety caps or lacking seals should not be accepted, as they may indicate potential counterfeit gas.

Further, one should check the due date of testing, marked on the inner side of the cylinder stay plate. In case the due date has expired, the cylinder does not meet safety standards.

“Please look for the due date of testing, which is marked on the inner side of the cylinder stay plate. Do not accept the cylinder if the due date is over,” EPRA advised.

Meanwhile, consumers were advised to avoid using open flames to detect leaks as it may compromise one’s safety.
