Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has lauded the dedication and selflessness of nurses on International Nurses’ Day by sharing the story of John Chesilwa, a nurse in West Pokot County whom she says runs a dispensary single-handily.

Nakhumicha took to social media to share her admiration for Chesilwa, who manages Sukut Dispensary ensuring vital healthcare services are accessible to all in the region.

She noted the role nurses play in delivering care to the most vulnerable members of society, echoing the principles laid down by Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing.

“On Friday I met John Chesilwa, a nurse who single-handedly runs Sukut Dispensary in West Pokot County, ensuring that everyone who goes to that facility can access basic healthcare services,” Nakhumicha expressed in her post.

The CS extended her gratitude to nurses across the nation, acknowledging their role in the provision of healthcare services.

“Nurses like John are the ones who exemplify the spirit of care that is at the heart of the noble profession founded by Florence Nightingale to provide care for the most vulnerable in our midst,” Nakhumicha remarked.

She further urged the public to join her in celebrating the thousands of committed nurses who tirelessly serve their communities, touching countless lives with their compassion and expertise.

“Today on the International Day of Nurses, I join millions of people who have received care from the thousands of committed nurses at various times in their lives to celebrate gallant nurses like John,” Nakhumicha stated.

Nakhumicha’s promise to nurses

Nakhumicha also pledged to prioritize the enhancement of their welfare and working conditions, recognizing their contribution to the realization of Universal Health Coverage.

“As a Ministry, we value their service and contribution to delivery of Universal Health Coverage and will continue to work to improve their welfare and their overall working conditions,” Nakhumicha affirmed.
