Surprise results and several young stars with breakout performances have been among the standout themes of the 2026 World Cup in North America.

K24 Digital Sports highlights some of the most shocking group-stage performances that saw teams defy the FIFA rankings, leaving fans and pundits alike debating how these underdogs managed to frustrate the tournament favourites.

Australia 2-0 Turkey (Group D)

Australia delivered one of the absolute shocks of the tournament by defeating Turkey 2-0, marking a triumphant statement on the global stage.

Heavily tipped as tournament dark horses, Vincenzo Montella’s star-studded Turkish squad, featuring Real Madrid’s Arda Güler, Juventus’ Kenan Yıldız, and Inter Milan’s Hakan Çalhanoğlu, failed to assert dominance in their opener.

Despite controlling possession and camping out around the Australian penalty area, Turkey was completely put at bay by a resolute Socceroos defense and stunned on the counter-attack for the Aussies’ dream opener.

Brazil 1-1 Morocco (Group C)

Having already proved their mettle on the global stage with a historic semi-final run in Qatar, Morocco entered this tournament as a heavily hyped African giant. Few, however, expected the masterclass they would produce against five-time world champions Brazil, now under the stewardship of Carlo Ancelotti.

Mohammed Ouahbi’s team not only dominated proceedings but also ran the famed Brazilian midfield ragged in the 1-1 draw. The performance was anchored by a spectacular breakthrough debut from Ligue 1 teenage sensation Ayoub Bouaddi, who announced himself to the world with a dominant display in the middle of the park to hold the Seleção to a 1-1 draw.

Netherlands 2-2 Japan (Group F)

This stunning four-goal thriller also stakes its claim among the competition’s biggest surprises. A resilient Japanese side twice fought from behind to stun a fancied Dutch national team boasting elite stars from Europe’s top five leagues.

With Ronald Koeman’s men entering the match as odds-on favorites, the Samurai Blue’s grit was on full display as they answered back instantly each time the Dutch scored—including a late equaliser right after Crysencio Summerville had restored the Oranje lead.

The matchup sparked heavy reactions from English Premier League legends Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher. While Keane tipped the Netherlands to come good in the subsequent stages, Carragher heaped praise on the Asian powerhouse.

“I don’t want to hear people saying this was an unlucky result for the Netherlands. Let us be honest, Japan deserved enormous credit for what they did tonight,” Carragher stated.

“Before the game, most people expected the Dutch to control the match and take all three points. Instead, Japan showed exactly why they’re one of the most dangerous teams in international football. They were organized, aggressive, and brave in possession.”

Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador (Group E)

In a match that closely mirrored Australia’s tactical triumph, Ivory Coast stunned South American heavyweights Ecuador with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

Ecuador walked into the clash riding a brilliant, historic 19-game unbeaten streak and came within inches of an early breakthrough, rattling the crossbar twice during a dominant opening half-hour.

Yet, it is the former AFCON giants who weathered the storm through defensive resilience. Substitute Amad Diallo popped up as the hero, netting a 90th-minute clincher after a blistering counter-attack highlighted by Wilfried Singo doing the afterburners from the flanks.

With the dramatic late winner, the Ivorians became the first African nation to secure three points at the 2026 tournament.

The Germans’ emphatic 7-1 steamrolling of minnows Curacao also claimed its place in the competition’s history. Kai Havertz led the rout as Julian Nagelsmann’s team kicked off their campaign in dominant fashion against the debutants.

The end result of a seven-goal hiding was far from what the early exchanges had been, much after Dick Advocaat’s side equalised after going down inside the opening ten minutes.
