Africa’s finest Morocco and giants Brazil shared the points after an exciting 1-1 draw in their opening Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

The highly anticipated clash brought together the five-time world champions and Morocco, the history-making African side that reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Both teams produced moments of quality, but neither could find a decisive winner in front of a packed crowd.

The 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi was one of the top performers for Morocco. He was an important part of his side’s midfield. He started as a defensive midfielder and went on to help his side establish control in the game.

The teenager managed 91 per cent pass accuracy (60/66), 100 per cent in the final third (16/16). Bouaddi also made 6 recoveries, won 5 interceptions, and won 9 duels in the entertaining fixture.

Match report

Morocco struck first in the 21st minute through midfielder Ismael Saibari. The goal came after a perfectly weighted through pass from Brahim Diaz split the Brazilian defence. Saibari timed his run to perfection before calmly lifting the ball over advancing goalkeeper Alisson to hand the Atlas Lions an early advantage.

The lead, however, lasted only 11 minutes as Brazil responded through star winger Vinicius Junior. Receiving the ball from Bruno Guimaraes on the left side of the penalty area, the Real Madrid forward cut inside before unleashing a powerful right-footed strike that flew beyond Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and into the net.

Both sides continued to search for a second goal before the break. Lucas Paqueta nearly put Brazil ahead with an acrobatic effort, but Bounou reacted brilliantly to tip the ball away.

Second half action

The second half remained competitive, with chances at both ends. Bounou once again demonstrated his quality when he denied Raphinha after Vinicius Junior’s dangerous cut-back created an opening inside the box.

Morocco also threatened late on as Neil El Aynaoui tested Alisson with a long-range effort deep into stoppage time. The Brazilian goalkeeper produced a diving save before quickly recovering to smother Ayoube Amaimouni’s follow-up attempt and preserve the draw.

The result leaves both teams with one point after their opening Group C fixture.

Despite Brazil failing to secure victory, Vinicius Junior’s impressive equaliser earned him the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match award. The goal also marked a rare occurrence for the Brazilian star, as it was the first time he had scored for the national team in a match that did not end in victory. His previous eight goals for the Seleção had all contributed to wins.

With both sides showing their attacking quality and defensive resilience, the draw sets up an intriguing battle for qualification from Group C as the tournament progresses.

Neymar did not feature for Brazil as he is still being monitored.
