Unbelievable! Ferran Torres reacts after his World Cup goal sinks Messi and Argentina

Spain forward Ferran Torres has opened up about the feeling of being crowned a world champion following Spain’s 1-0 win over Argentina in New York on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
Speaking after the final of the 2026 World Cup, the Barcelona attacker said he is yet to come to terms with the reality of being a world champion.
The Spanish substitute scored in the 106th minute to give his team a 1-0 win over defending champions Argentina. Torres pounced on a bouncing ball in the box and used his left foot to bury a shot just under the crossbar and into the back of the net in the opening moments of the second 15 minutes of extra time.
Deserved lead and winner
It proved a worthy goal for the European champions, who dominated their opponents in possession and shots at goal.
For his efforts, he received the Man of the Match award after becoming only the second substitute ever to score a World Cup final winner, after Mario Götze in 2014.
“I cannot honestly believe it. I am trying to enjoy it, but it is unbelievable. I did not think too much when I saw the ball coming; I hit it with the strength of all the Spanish people,” he said of his goal.
His effort formed part of an intensified Spanish foray at the Argentine goal, where goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez proved a hard nut to crack. Torres admitted he was increasingly getting frustrated after the keeper’s repeated heroics kept Spain at bay for long spells of the game.
“Yes, of course, I was frustrated. I tried with a header—he was there. Nico Williams tried—he blocked it. But when I got the shot, I wanted to test him one more time,” he added.
The attacker also opened up about his struggles prior to his moment of redemption. Torres had, ironically, been compelled to acknowledge his role as a substitute in Luis de la Fuente’s team heading into the tournament in North America and unbegrudgingly played his part coming on from the bench.
However, on a night when lead striker Mikel Oyarzabal could not find his scoring touch, the night would belong to the second-choice attacker.
“I got criticised many times, but destiny gives beautiful things to those who deserve them,” he said. “It’s not my goal; it’s from the 47 million Spanish fans.”
