They don’t deserve to be champions: Tusker coach questions Gor Mahia’s credentials

Tusker FC coach Julien Mette has hit back at Gor Mahia over the assertions that his team adopted anti-football antics during the 1-0 win over the league leaders on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

While addressing questions regarding his players’ time-wasting tactics, the Frenchman called into question the championship mentality of the FKF PL leaders. He asserted that they perhaps did not deserve the title if they required more than the 12 minutes of added time to overcome a team ranked 12th in the league.

“We can talk about the fouls in the game for each team, or the 12 minutes added in the game, or whether my players really enjoyed going down or were faking it. We have to take on football because if Gor Mahia needs the referee or more time to beat the team ranked ninth on the table, maybe they don’t deserve to be champions,” he charged.

Muguna roasts Gor

His brutal clapback followed former Gor Mahia midfielder Kenneth Muguna, who similarly blamed Gor for failing to deliver on the pitch and instead opting to vent their frustration after the loss.

“Champions perform anywhere, whether the environment is hostile, the pitch is poor, or the venue is far from home,” his statement read in part.

“We have won league titles playing in places like Narok, Kinoru, Awendo, Muhoroni, Chemelil, and Thika, among others. I am not advocating for bad pitches, but win first, then you can complain after the victory,” The multiple-time league winner with Gor and Police FC explained

In the clash, Brewers took an early lead through Ibrahim Joshua and defended resolutely to hand Gor Mahia their first loss of the year.

The defeat marked a major turning point in the league title race as K’Ogalo now trails AFC Leopards by only two points heading to the decisive run of the final rounds of fixtures.

Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor downplayed the impact of the defeat on the league title race, emphasising that the team still has their fate in their hands, despite the two-point gap with challengers AFC Leopards.

“It is not just two points; we would win the league if it ended now. We will try to better our results in our next match and continue the momentum we had before the last match. We are still very hopeful and believe we have done so much in the league so far. We are still on top by two points, and we will work from there as we head to our next match,” he stated.
