Footballer Scott McTominay to undergo surgery for irregular heartbeat

Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay will undergo a surgical procedure to treat an irregular heartbeat, the Serie A club has announced.
Napoli added that McTominay will be out until after the season’s first international break, meaning he will not play again until October 2026.
“Following the development of a minor, benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay over the coming days will undergo an operation, a PFA [pulsed field ablation],” Napoli said on Tuesday, September 2, 2026.
A PFA is a minimally invasive technique used to treat heart arrhythmias.
The 29-year-old was Serie A’s MVP when he helped Napoli win the title in 2025. He played for Scotland at this year’s World Cup and was also listed among the contenders for the last BallonD’or.
McTominay exited during the second half of Napoli’s 2-1 loss to Como on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
A product of the Manchester United youth system, which he joined during the Alex Ferguson tenure as manager of the Premier League club, McTominay has played in 73 internationals for Scotland, scoring 15 goals.
His 2024 move to Napoli came after seven seasons in the United First Team.
According to the club’s estimates, he should be back for the match against Frosinone on the weekend of October 10-11, 2026. The Scotsman will take advantage of the enforced break to undergo the procedure.
It should be noted, however, that the minimally invasive heart surgery he will undergo is among the most reliable and has a favorable prognosis. Several players, including top-level players, have undergone the same procedure in the past.
The medical update comes days after Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala was diagnosed with temporary, brief ‘absence seizures’ caused by a mild neurological dysfunction.
The 23-year-old Bayern Munich and Germany star was a subject of concern recently, with rumours surrounding his health following pre-season incidents where he briefly collapsed on the pitch twice during matches against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim.
He, however, allayed the fears about his health, assuring that he has taken steps towards full recovery with close consultation and regular contact with the experts.
