Eric Omondi questions Karen Nyamu’s attendance at Natalie Githinji’s endometriosis event

Stand-up comedian and activist Eric Omondi has questioned nominated Senator Karen Nyamu’s attendance at Natalie Githinji’s Endometriosis Warriors event held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Sunday, September 27,2026.
Speaking on Monday, September 28, 2026, Omondi explained why he felt Nyamu’s presence at the event was unnecessary, saying organisers had agreed that politicians would not attend so that the focus could remain on Githinji and endometriosis awareness.
Nyamu attended the event and took to the stage to speak about endometriosis, but sections of the crowd interrupted her with “Wantam” chants. She later said she had expected the reaction because of Omondi’s involvement in the event and his public criticism of the government.
Omondi questions Nyamu’s attendance
Omondi said Nyamu had contacted him before the event, expressing an interest in supporting Githinji.
“Karen Nyamu sijawai mwongelesha na alinipigia jana akisema anataka kusupport Natalie,” Omondi said.
He explained that he told Nyamu that Githinji had been trying to reach her and asked whether she had her phone number.
“Nikamwambia Natalie amekutafuta sana nikamwambia uko na number yake? Nikamwambia event inaendelea si uko na number yake mtumie pesa,” he said.
According to Omondi, Nyamu subsequently sent Githinji Ksh100,000. However, he said Nyamu did not tell him that she intended to attend the event.
“Hakuniambia anakuja event,” Omondi said.
He explained that organisers had already given instructions at the entrance regarding politicians attending the event.
“We had given orders kwa gate, no politicians because they would divert conversation, and it was about endometriosis and Natalie,” he said.
Why were politicians not invited?
Omondi said the decision to keep politicians away from the event was based on two reasons.
“The brief was very simple: no politicians allowed because of two reasons,” he said.
According to Omondi, the first reason was that politicians had not supported Githinji financially despite the costs associated with her treatment and the event.
“Reason number one, hakuna politician hatuupigia simu hata sai Natalie ako na deni hajamaliza kulipa KICC na sound; there is no single women rep ama aspirant at least in Nairobi hatukupigia. None of them supported Natalie,” he said.
Omondi said the second reason was to prevent the event from becoming a political platform and taking attention away from the campaign.
“Reason number two, we did not want you to come and divert our message and attention from endometriosis,” he said.
He questioned why Nyamu could not have allowed Githinji to have the spotlight at an event specifically organised around her advocacy work.
“Ata wewe ulijua ni nini itafanyika, kwa nini haungepatia Natalie moment yake?” Omondi asked.
Endometriosis awareness
Omondi said the KICC event was only part of a wider campaign to create awareness about endometriosis across the country.
“We will go around the country creating awareness for endometriosis. The Conversation is about Endo Warriors,” he said.
He also praised Kenyan artistes who attended the event and supported Githinji.
“Kenyan artistes, God bless you, wasanii walikuja karibu wote,” Omondi added.
The Sunday event brought together thousands of attendees, including musicians, influencers, celebrities and women living with endometriosis, for a day of awareness, advocacy and entertainment.
Nyamu defends her decision to attend
Following the backlash, Nyamu has since defended her decision to attend the event, saying she chose to show up because of her interest in endometriosis and her work in Parliament.
Nyamu has also said she will continue pushing for greater attention to endometriosis through her legislative work.
The exchange has since shifted some of the attention surrounding the event from its intended focus on endometriosis to the disagreement over Nyamu’s appearance and the reaction she received from sections of the crowd.
