Gospel singer Benachi mourns death of his father

Kenyan gospel singer Benachi is mourning the death of his father, whom he described as beloved, as he comes to terms with the loss.
The singer, whose real name is Benson Ongachi, shared the heartbreaking news on his social media accounts, saying he was struggling to find the right words to express his grief.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved DAD,” Benachi wrote on Monday, September 28,2026.
He said he was grateful to God for the time he had with his father, the memories they created and the life he lived.
“It’s difficult to find the words right now. I’m grateful to God for the time we had, the memories we shared, and the life he lived,” he added.
Benachi concluded his tribute by bidding his father farewell and expressing hope that they would meet again.
“Rest peacefully, Dad. You will forever remain in our hearts. Until we meet again,” he wrote.
The singer did not disclose the cause of his father’s death or provide details about the funeral arrangements.
Who is Benachi?
Benachi, whose real name is Benson Ongachi, is a Kenyan gospel singer and songwriter best known for his hit song Mwanake, a collaboration with the late gospel singer Peter Kaberere.
His passion for music began while he was still in school. He attended St John’s Primary School and later Butere High School, where he developed his musical abilities and performed as a percussionist during school functions.
Benachi later formed a gospel trio known as Gospel Brothers with two schoolmates. After the group eventually separated, he moved to Nairobi to pursue music as a solo artiste.
He recorded songs, including Hutoniacha and Dawa, before meeting Kaberere, who became an important mentor in his music career. Their collaboration on Mwanake helped propel Benachi into the Kenyan gospel spotlight.
Kaberere’s death in 2014 was another major loss in Benachi’s life. In a 2025 interview, the singer described his mentor’s death as the lowest moment of his life and revealed that he struggled with depression following the tragedy.
Benachi later moved to the United States, where he continued his gospel music career. His catalogue includes songs such as Nitembelee, Nifinyange, Tulia, Kidonda and Sio Mwisho.
The singer’s latest announcement marks another difficult moment for the gospel artiste as he mourns the loss of his father.
