Lucrative cash prizes Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards are fighting for in KPL title push
The race for the FKF Premier League title has entered a thrilling phase, with Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards firmly in contention as the league heads into the final stretch.
With 11 rounds remaining in the 2025/26 season, the battle for supremacy is intensifying as clubs vie for lucrative prize money and the coveted opportunity to represent Kenya on the continental stage in the CAF Champions League next season. The two sides are placed first and second, respectively, on the log, with 50 and 43 points.

Financial rewards increase
According to Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed, this season’s title race carries more weight than ever before, following the league organisers’ significant increase in financial rewards for top-performing teams.
For the first time in the history of Kenyan football, the league champions will pocket a record Ksh15 million, a massive increase from the previous Ksh5 million prize awarded to winners in past seasons. The second-placed team will receive Ksh3 million, while the third-place finisher will take home Ksh2 million.
In his Wednesday, March 11, 2026, update, Hussein noted that the enhanced prize structure is part of the federation’s broader strategy to elevate the standards of the domestic league and motivate clubs to compete at the highest level.
“This prize money boost is part of the Football Kenya Federation’s plan to increase competitiveness and reward excellence,” he said.
The financial incentive has added extra stakes to an already fierce rivalry between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, two clubs whose clashes, famously known as the Mashemeji Derby, remain the biggest spectacle in Kenyan football.

Both teams boast rich histories and massive fan bases, and their pursuit of the title has rekindled memories of past seasons when the two sides dominated the domestic scene. Their current push for the crown reflects their ambition to reclaim league glory and also to secure a return to Africa’s elite club competition.
Eyes on the jackpot
Participation in the CAF Champions League would provide an opportunity for the eventual champions to showcase Kenyan football on the continental stage while also earning additional financial rewards and exposure.
Beyond the rivalry between Leopards and Gor Mahia, several other teams, among them Shabana FC and Kakamega Homeboyz, are also eyeing the top positions as the league approaches its decisive phase. However, the spotlight remains firmly on the two traditional powerhouses whose pursuit of the Ksh15 million jackpot and continental qualification continues to capture the imagination of fans across the country.
