Mathare United confirm David Ouma as club’s new head coach
Mathare United have appointed experienced tactician David Ouma as the club’s new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season, marking a return to familiar territory for the highly-rated trainer, weeks after sacking John Kamau from the position.
In a statement on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the 2008 Kenyan Premier League champions confirmed that Ouma has signed a one-year contract and will immediately take charge of the men’s team, with preparations for the new campaign set to begin through pre-season training.
“Mathare United is pleased to announce the appointment of David Ouma as Head Coach of the Men’s team,” the club stated.
Familiar territory
Ouma’s return carries special significance given his longstanding connection with the Mathare football community. A product of the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), he previously served as assistant head coach at Mathare United between 2004 and 2005 before embarking on a coaching career that has taken him across the region.

The CAF A-licensed coach rejoins the Kenyan football scene after an impressive spell in Tanzania, where he spent the last three years guiding top-flight sides Coastal Union FC and Singida Black Stars. During his time there, Ouma earned widespread recognition for steering both clubs to continental football qualification, underlining his credentials as one of East Africa’s most accomplished coaches.
“Ouma, a MYSA alumnus, first served at the club as an assistant head coach between 2004 and 2005. He has signed a year-long deal and will begin his role immediately, with his first task being to bring the team together for pre-season training,” Mathare United said.
The appointment signals Mathare United’s ambition to strengthen their technical bench as they seek to build on recent progress and challenge more consistently in Kenyan football. Ouma’s experience in player development, tactical organization and continental competition is expected to be a major asset for the Slum Boys.
The club further highlighted the coach’s achievements in Tanzania, noting: “A CAF A-licensed coach, Ouma returns to the country after a remarkable three-year stint in Tanzania, where he led Premier League teams Coastal Union FC and Singida Black Stars to continental football.” The statement added.

With pre-season preparations now set to get underway, Ouma will be tasked with assembling a competitive squad capable of helping Mathare United achieve its objectives in the upcoming campaign.
Slum Boys survive
After an imminent relegation threat, Mathare United eventually escaped the chop in the final stages of the 2025/26 Football Kenya Federation Premier League season. The team finished 14th on the log with 41 points in 34 outings under the tutelage of interim head coach Mohamed Muchula.
