England-based Zak Vyner, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, made the most of his talent on his full debut for Wrexham FC in a fifth-round clash against Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Vyner, who had until then not started a game for his new club, featured for 76 minutes before being substituted with the game poised at 1-1. Chelsea eventually went on to win 4-2 after extra time.

The defender, who has spent almost his entire life in England, was among the midseason entrants to the Welsh club after ending his over-two-decade stint with Bristol City.

Against Chelsea he made the most of the rare opportunity against the fancied Blues side, featuring in an unfamiliar role as a midfielder but still managing to match it.

His performance was not lost on sections of Kenyans who watched him and later expressed their appraisal of the star.

“A good first half for Zak Vyner against Chelsea! Very composed,” presenter Hassan Zuma opined on his performance.

“Zak Vyner’s calmness, versatility, and confidence are needed in the Harambee Stars… Salim Mvurya, kindly find a way to make sure the issues blocking him from playing for Kenya are resolved,” another observer called for expediting his eligibility for Kenya.

Despite ending the tie on a losing note after extra time, where their qualifying chances took a dent after going down to ten men, manager Phil Parkinson also hailed the performance of the Red Dragons.

“We wanted to have a real go in the second period, and we had some great chances. We had moments even with 10 men, and the lads have to take a lot of credit tonight.

Vyner’s prospects for Kenya

The England-born defender committed to representing Kenya’s Harambee Stars in 2024 and was part of the Harambee Stars squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Burundi and Ivory Coast under coach Engin Firat.

He was unable to feature due to delays in processing his Kenyan passport.

There is, however, a renewed sense of his long-awaited debut for Kenyan colours as Benni McCarthy recently lifted the lid on a list of foreign-based players they are considering to represent Kenya in the coming future.

The list of players in the coach’s plans also includes Tyler Onyango of Everton FC among others
