Isak comments on Liverpool’s first win of the season and connection with Cody Gakpo

Alexander Isak was pleased to see Liverpool translate their tactical intentions into an impressive opening spell as they secured their first victory of the 2026-27 campaign with a 2-0 triumph over Ipswich Town on Friday night, September 4, 2026.
The Sweden international was the difference-maker at Portman Road, scoring twice inside the opening nine minutes to put Liverpool firmly in control. The result provided a much-needed response after the Reds had failed to win either of their first two league matches.
Liverpool’s aggressive approach from the outset was exactly what had been discussed before kick-off, and Isak was delighted that the team immediately delivered on that plan.
“Obviously we were waiting for the first win and we were talking about starting the game good, which we haven’t done recently. That was perfect for us to get two quick goals.”
The early goals also reflected a more attacking style that Liverpool are looking to establish under manager Andoni Iraola. Isak believes the team are gradually becoming more comfortable with the way they want to play in the final third.
“I think we’re starting to get the way that we want to play and be offensive and attack the defence. I think we showed that today. We scored two and we could have scored more.”
Both of Isak’s goals came after excellent deliveries from Cody Gakpo, continuing an encouraging understanding between the pair. Gakpo had also supplied the assist for Isak’s goal during last weekend’s meeting with Nottingham Forest.
Isak explained that Liverpool’s intention is to move forward quickly whenever they regain possession, taking advantage of the spaces that open up when opponents are transitioning.
“We were talking about when we win the ball to get forward as quickly as possible because that’s when things are quite open,” Isak continued.
“Obviously Cody found me twice pretty good. He’s done amazingly [in] assisting and finding me in those situations and in good positions where I enjoy having the ball.”
The striker has now scored three times in his first three appearances of the new campaign, underlining his importance to Liverpool’s attacking plans.
Despite his strong personal beginning to the season, however, Isak is not setting himself a specific goals target. Instead, he is concentrating on helping Liverpool continue improving one match at a time.
“It’s still early. I think we still have a lot to learn and it’s game by game at this point.” He concluded.
