Arsenal receive fresh William Saliba injury timeline after surgery decision

Arsenal have reportedly been given a clearer indication of when William Saliba could return to action as he continues his recovery from a back problem.
The French defender is set to miss Arsenal’s Community Shield meeting with Manchester City in Cardiff on Sunday, August 16, 2026, with Mikel Arteta unable to call upon one of his key defensive options.
Saliba has been out since suffering the injury while representing France at the 2026 World Cup. Earlier this week, Arteta provided an update on the centre-back, saying: “Wilo, as we all know, it’s more a long-term injury.”
Despite those concerns, a report from BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel on The Daily Grind suggests Arsenal now have a better idea of Saliba’s expected recovery period.
Saliba avoided lengthy surgery absence
Mokbel explained that surgery had previously been considered for the defender, and such a procedure could have kept him away from football for several months.
He said: “What I was told during the World Cup, if William Saliba was to have surgery, it would have been four to five months out.
“Thankfully for Arsenal, they managed to avoid that length of time, but I think we’re still looking at a minimum of two to three months.”
That update represents a more encouraging scenario for Arsenal, although Saliba is still expected to remain unavailable for a significant portion of the opening weeks of the campaign.
How many matches could Saliba miss?
Arsenal are scheduled to play five Premier League fixtures before the next international break, which is expected towards the end of September 2026.
Those matches will see the Gunners face Coventry City, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Sunderland and Brighton & Hove Albion.
The London club are also due to play a Champions League league-phase fixture and an EFL Cup third-round match during the same period.
Should the current recovery estimate prove accurate, Saliba could therefore miss eight competitive matches, including Sunday’s Community Shield encounter.
However, a return within two to three months could put the defender in contention to feature against Leeds United in the Premier League.
That fixture is currently pencilled in for October 10, 2026, although its date could still change depending on television scheduling.
For now, Arsenal will have to cope without Saliba as they begin the new campaign, while the Frenchman continues his rehabilitation with the hope of returning during the early part of the season.
