Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has weighed in on the ongoing leadership wrangles at Football Kenya Federation, revealing that the government is yet to receive any formal complaint despite growing concerns over divisions within the federation.

Speaking on the matter on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Mvurya painted a picture of a deeply divided football governing body, suggesting the existence of parallel factions operating within FKF.

The turmoil and wrangles within FKF escalated on Sunday, April 26, 2026, as suspended President Hussein Mohammed insisted he remains legally in office.

This follows a move by a faction led by his deputy, McDonald Mariga, and pro-NEC (National Executive Committee) members to uphold his suspension over a Ksh42 million African Nations Championship (2024 CHAN) insurance scandal.

Mvurya breaks silence

“It is like we have two factions at FKF,” he said.

The CS, however, clarified that the Ministry of Sports has not been officially engaged in the dispute, indicating that only informal communication has reached his office so far.

“As a ministry we don’t have anything official on our table, we have received anonymous letters only,” he added.

Mvurya’s remarks come at a time when Kenyan football has once again found itself under scrutiny, with internal disagreements threatening to destabilise the federation’s operations. The situation has already attracted the attention of the global football governing body FIFA, which has reportedly sought clarification from FKF over the unfolding issues.

The Sports CS welcomed FIFA’s intervention, expressing optimism that the process would help establish clarity and restore order within the federation.

“We are happy that FIFA has already written to the federation seeking clarification on these issues,” Mvurya noted.

He further emphasised that the government would await FIFA’s guidance before taking any position, underscoring the importance of respecting international football governance structures.

“We are waiting for their decision. Once they receive these documents, they will give the way forward,” he stated.

FIFA intervenes

The developments add another layer of uncertainty to Kenyan football, with stakeholders now looking to FIFA’s response as the key determinant in resolving the impasse at FKF. Meanwhile, in a letter dated Sunday, April 26, 2026, and copied to Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), FIFA confirmed that it is jointly reviewing the situation following reports that FKF’s top leadership was temporarily removed from office.
