Busy weekend: Mashemeji Derby, Kip Keino classic and other top sports events lined up

Several sporting events of monumental importance are set to take stage this weekend in what promises to be an action-filled three days of riveting action beginning Friday, April 24, 2026.
On Sunday, April 26, 2026, Kenyan football will come to a standstill as Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards clash in the 99th edition of the in-laws derby at Nyayo National Stadium.
The stakes could not be higher as Kenya’s most-followed clubs, AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, lock horns in what has been billed as the most consequential derby in recent history. In a thrilling turn of events, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards are locked in a fierce two-horse race for the 2026 title.

This marks the first time in nearly two decades that Kenya’s two most decorated clubs have faced off while both occupy the top of the table this late in the season.
Kip Keino Classic
This year’s Kip Keino Classic will light up Nyayo National Stadium this Friday, April 24, 2026, as the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold lands in Nairobi for an electrifying night of sporting excellence under the floodlights.
This year’s edition—the seventh overall—provides another rare spectacle as top athletes from Kenya and across the globe battle it out on the tracks of the Kenyan capital.

Entry to the event is free, and the programme runs from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
This edition comes with a thrill of its own, featuring the installation of a brand-new track, the addition of advanced wavelight pacing technology, and a strong lineup of elite athletes.
With the programme now set for the evening rather than the afternoon, it is shaping up to be one of the most standout editions yet.
Organisers have urged a massive turnout to support the event.
“It’s always the fans who make the difference in any sporting event, so come one, come all! Fill the stadium, represent your federation, and be part of something special. Come witness the Kip Keino Classic; this is where the magic happens!” Barnabas Korir, one of the organisers, said.
Beyond the Frontiers
Kenya will also be looking on with bated breath as the famous London Marathon returns for its 2026 edition. Kenya’s defending champion, Sebastian Sawe, is seeking to defend his title against a star-studded elite field, including Jacob Kiplimo and Joshua Cheptegei.
The women’s race will also see the New York City and double Boston Marathon champion, Hellen Obiri and other star Kenyan athletes take on Ethiopians and other world-class names.
Eyes will also be on the English Premier League, with major focus being on the Arsenal vs Newcastle match set for Saturday, April 25, 2026. Also, fans would be eager to see if Tottenham Hotspur will overcome Wolves to keep hopes alive amid relegation fears.
