Woman sentenced to 10 years for co-wife’s murder over chicken soup

A Nairobi High Court has sentenced a Ugandan woman, Sarah Namono, to 10 years in jail for killing her co-wife at their husband’s business premises along Juja Road on September 22, 2022.

According to the court papers, while at their husband’s business premises, a bitter acrimony erupted between Sarah and her co-wife, Grace Kibone (deceased).

The deceased (Grace) is said to have emptied Sarah’s chicken stew into a nearby trench, leading to a fight, but the two were separated.

Sarah, who had hidden a knife in her clothing, left, telling the deceased that it would be the last time she saw their husband.

The accused, full of anger and determined to fight her co-wife, went back to their husband’s business premises the following day, at around 9:30 pm, and stabbed Grace.

After the stabs, Grace fell, but her co-wife did not stop; she jumped on top of her and continued stabbing her in the neck and face and then pushed her into a nearby trench.

“As the deceased attempted to run away, the accused threw stones at her, saying, ‘Wewe utakufa,'” part of the court papers read.

She also threatened Anthony Mulwa, who tried to help the deceased, and told him, “Hata wewe nitakuua.”

The deceased was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Sarah was later arrested by members of the public from her house and given a thorough beating.

However, police rescued her and took her to the same hospital for treatment and eventually booked her at Pangani Police Station.

She pleaded guilty to the lesser but cognate offence of manslaughter under a plea agreement recorded on October 1, 2025, after two witnesses had testified against her on the original information for murder.

In his judgement delivered on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, Justice Kanyi Kimondo stated that he has considered that Sarah is a first offender who has expressed genuine remorse and handed her 10 years in prison.

“I accordingly sentence the accused to serve ten (10) years in jail. In accordance with section 333 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, the sentence shall run from September 23, 2022, the date when she was first arrested and placed in custody,” Judge Kimondo ruled.

Further, Judge Kimondo ordered that the convict be deported back to Uganda upon completion of her sentence, noting that the court found out that he is an undocumented immigrant.
