Uhuru joins world leaders in mourning passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson

Kenya’s fourth President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has joined world leaders in mourning the death of U.S. civil rights icon Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson, who passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at the age of 84.
Kenyatta described Rev. Jackson as a towering figure in the global fight for justice, equality, and human dignity. He paid tribute to Jackson’s lifelong dedication to advancing civil rights and promoting democratic freedoms in the United States and across the world.
Rev. Jackson, the founder of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, was a leading voice in the American civil rights movement and worked closely with leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. Over his decades of activism, he championed voting rights, economic justice, and social inclusion.

His efforts earned him international recognition as a diplomat and advocate for marginalised communities. Kenyatta noted that Jackson’s work left a lasting impact on global human rights movements.
Rev. Jackson’s ties with Kenya
Kenyatta highlighted Rev. Jackson’s long-standing connection with Kenya and the African continent, particularly his visit during Kenya’s historic transition in 2013. Rev. Jackson travelled to Nairobi in April 2013 to attend Kenyatta’s inauguration at Kasarani Stadium.
His presence symbolised solidarity, democratic partnership, and shared aspirations for inclusive governance. The former president said the visit was a gesture of goodwill and reaffirmed Kenya’s place in the global democratic community.

“As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life dedicated to justice, equality, and the empowerment of the downtrodden,” Kenyatta said.
He added that Rev. Jackson’s legacy would continue to inspire future leaders across the world. Rev. Jackson’s influence extended beyond America, as he participated in international peace missions and advocacy efforts that connected communities and nations. His life remains a testament to the power of moral leadership and principled activism.
Rev. Jackson’s dedication to social change and human rights has left an enduring mark on global society. Kenyatta’s tribute emphasised that the late civil rights leader’s work will continue to inspire generations committed to justice, equality, and the protection of human dignity.
His contributions, both in the United States and abroad, serve as a model for leaders seeking to advance fairness, inclusion, and global solidarity.
