Sakaja announces massive County effort to rescue residents amid Nairobi floods

Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced that the County Government has fully mobilised all available resources and personnel to manage the heavy floods in the city.

In an official statement issued on Friday night, March 6, 2026, Sakaja has urged Nairobi residents to remain vigilant, prioritise their safety, and use the county’s emergency hotlines.

He added that the interventions are aimed at safeguarding both lives and property as the rains continue to affect roads and neighbourhoods. The county has further activated its Multi-Sectoral Disaster and Flood Mitigation Committee to monitor the situation 24 hours a day and provide rapid response services where needed.

According to the Governor, teams from the county’s Mobility and Works sector, along with the Green Army, have been deployed across all sub-counties to conduct emergency clearing of drains and waterways.

Coordination with KeNHA and KURA

“NCCG is working in close coordination with KeNHA and KURA to ensure major road arteries remain motorable. Specifically, all KURA contractors have been directed to be on the ground immediately to conduct urgent mitigation on their corridors.”

“This includes opening up drainage blockages, removing fallen trees, and clearing debris to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians,” the statement reads.

Floods in Nairobi

This comes after several major roads in Nairobi remained impassable due to the heavy rains, leaving commuters stranded for hours. Videos circulating on social media show vehicles trapped in waist-deep floodwaters, while residents struggle to navigate submerged streets.

The floods have caused traffic chaos, disrupted daily life, and damaged property in multiple neighbourhoods. Authorities continue to urge caution, asking motorists and residents to avoid affected areas and follow emergency instructions as the county works to manage the ongoing rainfall and its impact.

Sakaja reminded the public that the county has provided 24-hour contact numbers for emergencies such as flooding, fallen trees, or other life-threatening situations. He urged residents to follow the instructions of the authorities and to avoid areas known to be at high risk.

“In case of flooding, fallen trees, or life-threatening emergencies, please contact our 24-hour dispatch centre immediately: 020 2222181/020 2223182/020 2222183/020 2344599,” a part of the statement says.
