Motorists urged to avoid flooded Mai Mahiu Suswa Narok road section
Motorists heading south of Nairobi got more than they bargained for today as part of the Mai Mahiu to Suswa to Narok Road (B7) was hit by flooding and thick silt deposits near Kedong Ranch, just outside Suswa.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said crews are working tirelessly to clear the affected areas and reopen the road as soon as possible.
“Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded areas and to follow the instructions of the police and traffic marshals. Ignoring this advice could lead to being washed away or stuck in the silt deposits,” KeNHA warned.

Drivers who have not yet started their journeys are being urged to consider using the Ngong to Suswa Road as an alternative route. Authorities also advised extreme caution on the stretch between Naivasha ICD (Km 14) and Suswa Ranch (Km 39), where water levels remain high.
“KeNHA assures all road users that it is working around the clock to restore normal traffic flow and ensure the safety of motorists,” the statement added.
The heavy rains, which have battered Nairobi and parts of the Rift Valley this week, have caused chaos on many roads. In Nairobi, areas including Uhuru Park, Mombasa Road, Jogoo Road, Langata Road and Limuru Road have reported flooding, stranding vehicles and pedestrians alike. Cars stalled in waterlogged streets have forced drivers to rethink their journeys, while some commuters have turned splashing through puddles into an unplanned adventure.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy rainfall over the next few days, particularly in the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Central Highlands, coastal counties and Nairobi. Residents near rivers and low-lying areas are urged to stay alert to the risk of flash floods.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) also reminded drivers to slow down, maintain safe distances, and avoid attempting flooded crossings unless necessary. With more rain expected, authorities and motorists are preparing for more soggy streets and unexpected adventures on the roads.
