Charles Kanjama, the Law Society of Kenya President-elect, has maintained that all abductions must first be reported to security agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Speaking exclusively as a panellist on a local TV station, Kanjama said Kenyans need to understand the proper process when faced with alleged violations of the rule of law.

According to him, cases of abduction and similar violations require a structured approach before escalating matters further.

Charles Kanjama says abductions must be reported

“Many Kenyans will face challenges of violations of the rule of law, such as abductions, and it is important that Kenyans are educated on the process to follow.

“First, you report to the police, and if you need a substantial level of investigations then you report to the DCI. If someone’s life is in danger, then publicise aggressively across the media.

“If you find a challenge with the first two steps, then engage human rights individuals,” Kanjama said.

His remarks came after a local TV station panellist pressed him on whether he would personally take up reported cases.

The panellist noted that in some instances, the reporting steps had already been followed and that members of the public were looking to him for direct intervention.

In response, Kanjama said the Law Society of Kenya operates through established structures.

“LSK works effectively when you use the structures that are in the office,” he said.

When asked whether he was in a position to comment or offer assistance directly, Kanjama clarified that the public required institutional support rather than personal intervention.

“What they needed was not my personal assistance but that of LSK. I take up office on the 27th of March, and before that, we have another leadership in place,” he stated.

Role of LSK leadership

Kanjama added that once he officially assumes office, he intends to involve the entire LSK leadership and members in addressing issues affecting the public.

“I would like to bring in the entire LSK leadership and lawyers so that they are all championing issues of public interest litigation and support the public in situations where the rule of law has been threatened and human rights violated,” he said.

His comments come amid growing public concern over alleged abductions and the role institutions should play in safeguarding human rights, with Kanjama emphasising procedure, coordination, and collective action within the legal fraternity.
