Lion pride clashes leave 2 lionesses injured in Maasai Mara

Two lionesses were injured this week during fights between prides in the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
In a statement shared by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) on Friday, December 5, 2025, in the Talek area, a lioness from the Ronkai Pride was badly hurt, with injuries to her hamstrings, right abdomen, and right eye.
“This week, the Mara Vet Team responded to two separate cases of lion injuries within the Maasai Mara National Reserve following intraspecific conflict between prides. In the Talek area, an adult lioness from the Ronkai Pride was immobilised and examined after sustaining multiple injuries to the hamstrings, right abdomen, and right eye,” KWS said.
The Mara Vet Team responded quickly. They treated her wounds with antibiotics and eye medication, and she is expected to recover fully.
In the Fig Tree area, a lioness from the Fig Tree Pride was found with minor scratches after a clash with the Ronkai Pride. She was healthy and did not need treatment. The vet team and reserve security staff are keeping a close watch on her.
“The team cleaned and flushed the wounds and administered systemic antibiotics plus eye medication. The prognosis is positive, and the lioness is expected to make a full recovery. In a related incident at the Fig Tree area, a lioness from the Fig Tree Pride was found with mild superficial injuries after a clash with the Ronkai Pride,” the statement read in part.
Adding;
“Due to the minor nature of the wounds and her good body condition, no treatment was required. The Mara Vet Team, together with MMNR security personnel, will continue to closely monitor her progress. These interventions highlight ongoing efforts to safeguard Kenyaβs iconic wildlife and ensure that natural territorial behaviours do not lead to unnecessary suffering.”
