Kenya Power began progressively restoring power across major metropolitan areas late Wednesday evening, July 29, 20265, following a three-hour widespread blackout that plunged the capital and multiple key economic hubs into sudden darkness.

The major outage, which hit shortly after 8:00 pm, disrupted businesses, public transport terminals, and domestic activities across Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya, and portions of the Central Rift.

In an initial alert issued at 9:05 pm, state utility provider Kenya Power confirmed that technical teams were troubleshooting a widespread grid failure, though the North Rift and Western regions remained largely unaffected.

“We wish to inform our esteemed customers that we are experiencing a widespread power outage affecting customers in Nairobi, Coast, Mt. Kenya and parts of Central Rift,” the utility stated during the outage.

“However, parts of North Rift and Western regions are on supply.”

As commercial districts in Nairobi switched to emergency generators and major transit sites experienced brief operational delays, engineers worked to re-energise major transmission nodes.

In a follow-up statement posted on social media at 10:11 pm., Kenya Power announced that recovery efforts were underway:

While power is returning to key substations, technical teams continue monitoring the national grid to restore full load across all affected counties. Kenya Power has yet to disclose the precise root cause of the system disturbance.
