Kenya Power has explained why transformers remain among the most closely maintained pieces of equipment in its electricity distribution network, highlighting their importance in keeping homes, businesses and communities connected to the power supply.

In a Facebook post on Friday, August 21, 2026, the utility company said routine maintenance plays a critical role in keeping transformers reliable and extending their operational lifespan, while also reducing the likelihood of unexpected power outages.

“Have you ever wondered why we do routine maintenance on our transformers?” Kenya Power posed.

Kenya Power described transformers as some of the hardest-working equipment on the power line, underlining the demanding role they play in the electricity distribution network.

The company said regular maintenance helps ensure that the equipment continues operating reliably despite the demands placed on it.

“Transformers are some of the hardest working equipment on the power line,” Kenya Power said.

According to the utility, routine maintenance is intended to keep transformers in good working condition and help identify issues before they develop into failures that could disrupt electricity supply.

The company said maintenance also helps extend the lifespan of transformers, allowing the equipment to continue serving customers for longer.

It further noted that regular checks help reduce the risk of unexpected outages, which can affect households, businesses and other electricity users relying on the network.

“Routine maintenance helps keep them reliable, extends their lifespan and reduces the risk of unexpected outages,” Kenya Power said.

The explanation comes as Kenya Power continues to carry out scheduled maintenance works across different parts of the country, with customers regularly notified of planned interruptions resulting from such works.

Power outage

On the same day, the utility company also announced a planned eight-hour power interruption expected to affect parts of Mombasa Road in Nairobi on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

Kenya Power said the scheduled interruption would run from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm as the company carried out planned maintenance.

According to the notice, Alliance Concrete, Portland and adjacent customers were listed among those expected to be affected by the interruption.

The planned outage formed part of Kenya Power’s wider maintenance programme through which the utility undertakes work on its electricity distribution infrastructure while notifying customers in advance.

Customers in the affected areas were advised to take note of the scheduled interruption and make the necessary arrangements before the power was switched off.
