Kenya Met predicts mixed weather conditions countrywide on Tuesday, September 15
By Dan Kauna, September 14, 2026Nairobi residents and much of the country should brace for a mixed bag of sunshine, cloud cover and light rain on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department’s latest forecast.
The national outlook points to rain being expected in some parts of nearly 30 counties, cutting across the Rift Valley, western Kenya, Central Kenya and stretches of the coast, including Kericho, Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru, Kiambu, Meru, Nyeri, Mombasa and Kilifi.
Motorists and residents along the coast and in the north should also take note of a wind advisory.
The department warns of “strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s)” sweeping through Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties, a reminder for fishermen and residents along the coastline to stay alert.
Nairobi and the wider picture
In Nairobi, expect a cool, cloudy start giving way to sunny intervals by afternoon. The capital will see temperatures range between 16°C and 26°C, with the night staying partly cloudy.
Mandera and Turkana will feel the heat most, both forecast to hit 37°C, the warmest spots in the country on Tuesday.
At the other end, Nyandarua will wake up to a chilly 7°C, the coldest reading nationwide, while nearby Nyeri and Kirinyaga counties also brace for light showers overnight.
Coastal counties Mombasa and Kwale can expect light showers over few places in the morning before sunny intervals return in the afternoon.
Further inland, western counties such as Kakamega, Bungoma and Kericho should prepare for moderate showers with thunderstorms expected over few places later in the day.
Rain already recorded, sun times to plan around
Looking back, Kisii recorded the heaviest rainfall in the 24 hours to September 14, with readings pushing past 30mm, followed by Nanyuki at around 22mm and Butere at roughly 21mm.
Most other stations, including Kangema, Kericho and Kisumu, recorded much lighter totals.
For those planning their day, sunrise in Nairobi is expected at 6:25 am with sunset at 6:30 pm, while Mombasa records the earliest sunrise at 6:14 am and the earliest sunset at 6:18 pm among the country’s major cities.
