The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has called for a structured audit and due process following the removal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, February 26, 2027, the doctors’ umbrella body said it had taken note of the unfolding situation at the Mombasa-based facility, stressing that healthcare institutions remain critical pillars of public trust and must be managed with transparency and accountability.

“The Kenya Medical Association is the umbrella professional association for doctors in Kenya, with a twin mission: to champion the welfare of doctors and advocate for the highest standard of quality healthcare in Kenya,” the KMA statement read in part.

The association advised that any concerns touching on patient care or service delivery should be subjected to a clear, structured and transparent review process to ensure that decisions are not only fair but also guided by evidence and professionalism.

At the same time, KMA cautioned against political interference in healthcare systems, maintaining that medical institutions are established to serve patients and should not be influenced by external interests.

“KMA takes note of the incident at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital leading to the removal of its Chief Executive Officer on allegations of negligence and gross misconduct. Healthcare institutions are pillars of public trust and, where concerns have been raised regarding patient care or service delivery, should be subjected to a structured and transparent review process. We therefore advise that an audit and due process be undertaken at CGTRH to bring this concern to a logical conclusion,” the statement added.

The body emphasised that decisions affecting healthcare delivery must follow due process and uphold the highest standards of professionalism.

“KMA holds the stance that healthcare delivery must be devoid of political interests or influence. Health facilities exist to serve patients, and decisions affecting health systems must be guided by evidence, professionalism, and due process,” it added.

KMA further reiterated its commitment to championing the welfare of doctors while advocating for quality healthcare across the country, noting that maintaining integrity within health institutions is key to sustaining public confidence.

The statement was signed by KMA President Dr Simon Kigondu and Coast Division Chairman Dr Haroon Saeed.

“The Kenya Medical Association remains committed to upholding high standards of professionalism and advocating for the delivery of quality healthcare for all,” the statement concluded.
