KeNHA announces 8-day closure of Uhuru Highway section

Thousands of motorists and night-time businesses are adjusting plans after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced an 8-night closure of a major section of Uhuru Highway between the University of Nairobi Roundabout and Westlands Roundabout.
In a public notice, KeNHA said the shutdown, which runs from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am daily between February 6 and February 13, 2026, is aimed at road repairs and maintenance.
The closure could put pressure on Nairobi’s night-time economy, including logistics firms, matatu operators, couriers, and late-shift workers, as they are forced to reroute through longer alternative roads.
KeNHA said the temporary closure is to allow for highway maintenance works and urged motorists to follow designated alternative routes and cooperate with traffic marshals.
“We expect some inconvenience, but these repairs will improve safety and reduce long-term costs for road users. Please plan for extra travel time at night.”

KeNHA has outlined alternative routes for motorists. Nakuru-bound traffic can use Nyerere Road, Arboretum Drive, Westlands Ring Road, and the Nairobi Expressway. Mombasa-bound traffic may divert via Parklands Ring Road, Ojijo Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, and University Way.
“All Motorists intending to access Uhuru Highway (A8 Road) and Chiromo Road (Nakuru-bound) can use Nyerere Road, Arboretum Drive, Westlands Ring Road and the Nairobi Expressway. Further, motorists intending to join Uhuru Highway (A8 Road) – Mombasa bound, can use alternative routes such as Parklands Ring Road, Ojijo Road, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, University Way and the Nairobi Expressway,” KeNHA said.
KeNHA assured the public that normal traffic operations will resume after the works are completed on February 13, 2026.
“Motorists are advised to follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site. Normal traffic operations on the road will be restored upon completion of the works.”
