Kaimosi University set for STEM makeover with Ksh138M boost

Kaimosi Friends University in Vihiga County has received a major boost in its growth and transformation journey after signing the Implementation Agreement for the Higher Education, Science and Technology Phase II Project (HEST II).

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba noted that HEST II, a five-year flagship government initiative, is designed to transform Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Kenyan universities.

Ogamba said the project also seeks to strengthen institutional capacity through strategic investments in infrastructure, modern equipment, academic development, research enhancement, and governance systems.

He said that for Kaimosi Friends University, the project will see a sum of Ksh138 000 000 injected into the institution through support for STEM and medical science equipment and laboratory furniture.

Kaimosi Friends University Vice Chancellor Peter Mwita termed the investment a significant step towards enhancing practical training, laboratory instruction, and research innovation across relevant programmes, thus ensuring students receive hands-on, industry-relevant learning experiences.

Mwita said the university received its charter in 2022 and, consequently, its first substantive Vice Chancellor in 2025, and now seeks to strengthen its preparedness to receive learners transitioning from the Competency-Based Education (CBE) pathway.

The signing ceremony was held on Monday, 16 February 2026, at the Ministry of Education offices and was led by Cabinet Secretary Ogamba. It brought together council chairpersons and vice chancellors from 19 public universities across the country.

Kaimosi Friends University was represented by the Chairman of Council, Stanley Khainga, and the Vice Chancellor, Peter Mwita, who reaffirmed the university’s strong leadership commitment to national education reforms and institutional excellence.

“The Ministry of Education has signed the project that seeks to strengthen institutional capacity through strategic investments in infrastructure, modern equipment, academic development, research enhancement, and governance systems,” said Ogamba.

“For Kaimosi Friends University, this project will see a sum of Ksh 138 million injected into the institution through support for STEM and medical science equipment and laboratory furniture,” said Ogamba.

Mwita said the signing of the Implementation Agreement underscores the university’s growing national profile and strategic alignment with government priorities in education, science, and technology.

He said the signing further demonstrates the university’s commitment to delivering quality, accessible, and transformative higher education.

“As the university continues to expand its infrastructure, modernise its facilities and strengthen its academic programmes, HEST II will play a pivotal role in accelerating its journey toward becoming a centre of excellence in STEM and medical sciences,” said Stanley Khainga, Chairperson of Kaimosi Friends University Council.
