Jesus fasting for 40 days and nights and not dying should be the reason Murang’a man Jimmy Irungu should not quit his 80-hour tree-hugging challenge.

Through his official Facebook account, Nairobi County Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Officer Geoffrey Mosiria went straight to encouraging Irungu to push harder, while openly acknowledging Irungu’s bold effort to raise national awareness about cancer.

Mosiria’s remarks came as Irungu continues hugging a tree in Murang’a as part of a symbolic protest meant to pressure the government to declare cancer a national disaster.

‘Jikaze kama Yesu’

In a post that quickly went viral, Mosiria mixed humour, faith, and urgency to rally support for the campaign.

Majamaa, boy child, atume PayBill!” he wrote, before turning serious about the disease Irungu is protesting against.

Cancer ni adui mbaya ambaye amepunguza familia nyingi hadi umaskini na kuchukua maisha ya watu wengi,” Mosiria stated.

He warned that the disease has silently destroyed families and driven households into poverty.

Referencing biblical endurance, Mosiria challenged Irungu to remain strong.

Kama Yesu alifunga siku 40, hii yako 80 hours ni kidogo. Jikaze!” he wrote, likening the tree-hugging challenge to Jesus’ 40 days of fasting.

Mosiria also playfully questioned Irungu’s stamina, asking, “Ako kwa mti bado, ama tayari alishachoka?” before proposing rewards if he completes the challenge.

Among his suggestions were a Dubai trip and even a visit to the State House.

Akimaliza 80 hours, apewe pia trip ya kuenda Dubai… Pia ikiwezekana apelekwe State House!” he added.

Cancer message grows

Mosiria went further to joke that Irungu’s move could push Truphena Muthoni to raise her own endurance record. “Itabidi Truphena arudi apandishe masaa hadi 100 hours, juu boy child ameamua kumpita,” he quipped.

Irungu, who days earlier explained why he embarked on the challenge, has maintained that his mission is not about records or fame.

Niliamua ku hug mti kwa sababu ya ugonjwa wa cancer… Ugonjwa huu umekuwa ukimaliza watu wengi,” he said previously, urging the government to treat cancer with the same urgency once accorded to HIV.

Earlier in the day, environmentalist Truphena Muthoni, alongside other influencers, visited the scene where pastor Jimmy Irungu is continuing with his challenge.

Likewise, the Kenyan government, especially the Ministry of Health, is under pressure from all quarters to ensure that the Universal Health Coverage will not remain a pipe dream but will be a reality, especially with the increased taxation.
