Arsenal step up talks for Ezri Konsa transfer

Arsenal have moved into advanced negotiations with Aston Villa over a potential deal for England defender Ezri Konsa.
The north London club have maintained an interest in the 28-year-old throughout the summer and are now pushing ahead with discussions as they seek to strengthen their defensive options.
Villa had initially placed a £60 million (Ksh10.52 billion) valuation on Konsa, a figure Arsenal were not prepared to pay. However, negotiations have now progressed, suggesting the two clubs may be moving closer to an agreement.
Konsa still has two years left on his contract with Aston Villa.
Arsenal had also considered a move for Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah, but their attention now appears to have shifted firmly towards Konsa.
Arsenal’s defensive situation
The Gunners’ need for another versatile defender has increased because William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are currently sidelined with injuries.

Konsa would offer Mikel Arteta additional options because of his ability to operate both in central defence and at right-back.
Arsenal already have Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White capable of covering those positions. Both featured effectively during the Community Shield victory over Manchester City, although White’s recent injury problems have raised questions over his availability throughout the season.
The importance of defensive depth was highlighted in the previous Champions League campaign when Mosquera was required to play in an unfamiliar position during the final against Paris Saint-Germain. The situation eventually contributed to him giving away a penalty.
Why Konsa appeals to Arsenal
Konsa’s defensive statistics from last season make him an attractive option for Arteta.
The England international recorded more successful ground duels than any other Premier League player during the previous campaign, finishing ahead of defenders including Virgil van Dijk and Arsenal’s Gabriel.
His strength in one-on-one situations fits closely with Arteta’s preference for defenders who are comfortable competing physically and winning individual battles.
A successful move would therefore provide Arsenal with greater depth while adding a defender whose qualities are well suited to the manager’s tactical demands.
Arteta outlines Arsenal’s ambitions
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made clear that the club remains focused on assembling a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
Following Arsenal’s Premier League success and their 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City, Arteta said the club’s long-term objective was to establish itself among the world’s leading teams.
“It’s certainly the ambition of the club and the owners to be the best club in the world,” he told Sky Sports at a Premier League launch event ahead of Arsenal’s opening fixture against Coventry.
He added: “In order to do that, you need the best facilities, the best stadium, the best supporters, and you need the best squad and the best players in the world.
“Those are the ones that win you football matches and the ones that can be decisive when it matters.
“That’s what we try to build with the actual players that we have, and with the players that we want to sign to make the difference for Arsenal.”

Arsenal begin the new campaign as favourites to retain their Premier League crown, but Arteta insists his players remain motivated despite being regarded as the team to beat.
“This is part of our industry, and that’s okay,” he said. “For me, it’s when I look into the eyes of my players and I see that fire, that desire and the will to be better every single day. That’s the only thing that I care about.”
Arsenal have not successfully defended a top-flight title since the 1930s, giving Arteta another significant challenge as he attempts to lead the club to consecutive championships.
“That’s an opportunity that we have ahead, and we are very conscious of what it’s going to take to deliver that,” he said. “But I feel the ambition, I feel the desire, and I feel the ability and the conviction around the team that we can do it.”
Should Arsenal complete the Konsa deal, attention is expected to turn towards the attacking position they have been attempting to reinforce throughout the transfer window.
