Cold nights ahead as Kenya Met warns of major temperature drop

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans to prepare for cold nights and early mornings as temperatures are expected to drop significantly in several parts of the country between June 16 and June 22, 2026.

According to the latest weather forecast released on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, some areas, especially parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and regions around Mt Kilimanjaro, are likely to experience temperatures below 10°C.

Nyahururu is expected to record the lowest temperatures in the country at 4°C, while Narok and Laikipia will experience minimum temperatures of 8°C. Eldoret and Kericho are expected to record 9°C, while Kitale, Nakuru, and Nairobi are forecast to experience 10°C, 11°C, and 13°C, respectively.

“Cool night-time and early morning conditions are expected over some parts of the country during the forecast period,” Kenya Met warned.

Areas likely to experience temperatures below 10°C include parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and areas around Mt Kilimanjaro.

Weatherman’s advisory

Residents have been advised to keep warm during the night and early morning hours, with special attention being given to children, the elderly, and other vulnerable people.

Farmers have also been urged to monitor livestock and sensitive crops during the cold mornings.

Hot temperature

Despite the cold conditions in some parts of the country, Kenya Met noted that other regions will experience hot daytime temperatures during the same period.

According to the weatherman, areas in North-eastern Kenya, North-western Kenya, the Coast, and parts of the South-eastern lowlands are expected to record temperatures above 30°C.

Mandera is forecast to be the hottest area with daytime temperatures reaching 38°C, followed by Lodwar at 36°C, Garissa at 35°C, and Wajir at 34°C. Voi, Kakamega, Lamu, Mombasa, and Kisumu are also expected to experience hot conditions, with temperatures ranging between 30°C and 33°C.

The department advised residents in hot areas to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and take extra care of children, the elderly, and livestock.

The latest forecast highlights Kenya’s contrasting weather conditions, with some regions preparing for chilly nights while others brace for intense daytime heat.
