Bus driver involved in the head-on collision with Cyrus Jirongo’s car speaks
The driver of a bus that was involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle belonging to businessman and former politician Cyrus Jirongo, who died on the spot, has spoken out, giving his account of the early-morning accident.
The crash occurred along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
The bus driver, who identified himself as Tiras Kamau Githinji, said he has worked with Climax Coaches for eight years and was on duty at the time of the incident.
“Mimi naitwa Tiras Kamau Githinji, driver wa Climax Coaches. Nimefanyia kampuni miaka nane,” he said.
According to Githinji, he was driving from Nairobi to Busia when the accident happened. He claims the Mercedes-Benz vehicle involved was emerging from a petrol station and entered the highway without giving way.
“Ile Mercedes ilikuwa inatoka kwa petrol station, mimi natoka Nairobi naenda Busia. Mercedes hakugive way wakati aliingia kwa barabara,” he explained.
He added that traffic congestion on the road appeared to influence the other driver’s decision.
“Aliona magari zimeweka jam, akaamua kuingia upande yangu. Tukakutana kichwa na kichwa,” Githinji said.
The bus driver noted that while the Mercedes had one occupant, his bus was carrying 65 passengers, forcing him to make a split-second decision to avoid a more serious tragedy.
“Nilijaribu kuokoa yeye, nikaskia gari yangu inaweza enda chini. Ndiyo nikakanyaga breki, lakini akakuja kama ameniingia,” he recounted.
Githinji said it was only after police officers arrived at the scene that he learned the identity of the person involved.
“Baadaye maaskari walipokuja ndipo niliskia ni Mheshimiwa Cyrus Jirongo,” he said.

The late is best known for his influential role in Kenyan politics during the 1990s and early 2000s. He rose to national prominence as a powerful mobiliser and strategist within the former ruling party, the Kenya African National Union (KANU), before later establishing his own political movement.
His political breakthrough came in the early 1990s when he became the Chairman of Youth for KANU ’92 (YK’92), a highly influential lobby group formed to mobilise youth support for President Daniel arap Moi ahead of the 1992 multiparty elections.
