3 nabbed for extorting money from bar owners in Mtito Andei

Detectives have nabbed three persons of interest accused of extorting money from bar owners and members of the public in Mtito Andei town, following swift police action prompted by reports from victims.

In a statement on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that the persons of interest were moving from one establishment to another in a white Toyota Axio, intimidating bar owners and demanding money while posing as authority figures.

Acting on the reports, detectives moved in and arrested the persons of interest, who were identified as a member of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), a serving police officer, and a civilian.

“Further scrutiny peeled back the layers of deception. The vehicle they were using bore a fake registration number, KDB 648W, while its true registration was KDD 574W. A search of the car unearthed a black pistol holster, a pair of handcuffs, and other items,” read the statement in part.

Additionally, the DCI revealed that the persons of interest were taken into custody and later subjected to an identification parade, during which the victims positively identified them as the individuals involved in the extortion scheme.

They are currently undergoing processing as detectives finalise investigations ahead of their arraignment in court.

“They are now undergoing processing as detectives prepare to present them before the court,” DCI added.

TSC scam

This comes a month after four people were arrested in Bomet County in connection with a massive fake Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recruitment scam that defrauded unsuspecting job seekers of more than Ksh40 million.

According to the DCI, detectives attached to the TSC conducted an extensive investigation that led to the arrest of the persons of interest believed to be behind a sophisticated scheme involving forged TSC appointment letters

In a statement on Friday, January 9, 2026, the DCI explained that the scheme targeted unemployed teachers and desperate job seekers, demanding large sums of money in exchange for fake appointment letters that promised permanent and pensionable employment with the TSC.

“Many victims reportedly took loans, sold property, or exhausted their savings in pursuit of the promised jobs,” the statement read in part.“The fraud network is believed to extend beyond Bomet County to Kericho, Narok, Kisii, and Nyamira, and efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest additional suspects linked to the syndicate.”

Further, the DCI revealed that it is working closely with the TSC and reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling criminal networks that exploit job seekers and undermine public trust in government institutions.

The agency also warned members of the public to remain vigilant and to verify all recruitment opportunities through official TSC channels, emphasising that the commission does not charge any fees for employment.
