As Kenya braces itself for the 2027 general elections, political alignments are already shifting, and the opposition is once again at a crossroads.

Among the many figures who have declared interest in the role of opposition flag bearer, few have as much at stake or as much to offer as People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua.

Karua is no stranger to the national stage. Known widely as the “Iron Lady” of Kenyan politics, she has built a formidable legacy over three decades as a staunch defender of human rights, the rule of law, and constitutionalism.

But it is her recent political repositioning and unexpected alliance with the youthful Gen Z that has reenergised her national appeal and reshaped her prospects in the 2027 opposition race.

In 2022, Karua was thrust into the national spotlight as the running mate to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga under the Azimio la Umoja coalition. While the ticket ultimately lost to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance, Karua emerged from the race with her credibility intact and her image burnished.

Unlike many who fade into obscurity after electoral defeat, she has used the post-2022 political terrain to consolidate her moral authority and reinvent her political brand.

Whom will opposition pick?

The recent Gen Z-led protests, sparked by frustrations over corruption, high taxation, unemployment, and poor governance, presented a defining moment for Karua. While many seasoned politicians either dismissed the movement or attempted to hijack it for political gain, Karua stood out by listening, not leading; by supporting, not speaking over.

Her presence at key moments, both physically and through vocal social media support, positioned her as an elder stateswoman who genuinely understands the anxieties and aspirations of Kenya’s young population.

This alignment with Gen Z, who are fast becoming a dominant electoral demographic, cannot be underestimated. In 2027, a significant portion of the electorate will consist of first-time or second-time voters disillusioned with traditional political narratives.

Karua’s credibility with this group, combined with her untainted record on corruption and her long history of championing human rights, gives her a unique advantage over other opposition contenders who are either part of the political establishment or have failed to connect authentically with the youth.

Moreover, her steadfast principles and independence are exactly what the opposition needs at a time when public trust in political parties is at an all-time low. Her political career has not been without its share of criticism; some call her rigid or too idealistic, but in an era where political pragmatism has led to betrayals and backroom deals, her consistency is refreshing.

However, the contest is stiff, as other opposition leaders, such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua, have robust political pedigrees. Still, Karua’s presence balances the matrix, could mark the twilight of a storied political career. If she succeeds, she has a real chance of turning her long-standing ideals into actionable national policy.
