Why Journalism remains one of the World’s most important professions

I often get several questions from people around me about why I chose journalism, and right here is my why.

In an era where information travels across the globe in seconds, journalism remains one of the most important professions in society.

At its heart, journalism is about gathering, analysing, and sharing information in a way that helps people understand the world around them.

Journalists play a critical role in informing the public, holding powerful institutions accountable, and ensuring that citizens have access to accurate and reliable information.

Whether reporting on politics, health, education, business, or community issues, our work helps people make sense of events and developments that affect their daily lives.

At its core, journalism is about uncovering the truth and sharing it with the public. More importantly, truthful journalism empowers citizens to make informed decisions about their lives, their communities, and their governments.

Today, that responsibility is more important than ever. We live in a world where rumours spread quickly and misinformation can travel faster than facts.

As journalists, our job is not simply to report what is being said. It is to verify information, provide context, and help audiences separate truth from speculation.

Accountability

One of the most significant functions of journalism is promoting accountability. Through investigative reporting, journalists expose corruption, human rights abuses, misuse of public resources, and other forms of wrongdoing that might otherwise remain hidden.

Many important reforms throughout history have been driven by courageous journalists who brought critical issues to light despite facing immense pressure and resistance.

From the procurement irregularities within the National Youth Service(NYS), to the past Anglo Leasing scandal, just a few examples, journalism has repeatedly demonstrated its power to shine a light on issues that those in power would rather keep hidden.

When journalists uncover the truth, they give citizens the information they need to demand change.

Beyond the headlines and breaking news alerts, journalism is also deeply human. It is about sitting with people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives and listening to their experiences.

It is about celebrating achievements, documenting history as it unfolds, and preserving stories that might otherwise be forgotten.

Debunking

The rise of social media and digital platforms has made journalism even more essential. While people now have unprecedented access to information, they are also constantly exposed to misinformation, disinformation, and unverified content.

Professional journalists adhere to ethical standards that require fact-checking, verification, balance, and fairness. Our commitment to accuracy helps distinguish credible information from rumours and falsehoods.

For me, journalism is more than a profession; it is a public service. It is an opportunity to inform, educate, amplify unheard voices, and contribute to a more informed society.

Every story has the potential to spark conversation, inspire change, or simply help someone understand an issue a little better.
